Chiropractic care focuses on the nervous system and how it controls everything in the body. The nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body. Your nervous system consists of your brain, spinal cord and millions of nerves. The brain is protected by the skull, your spinal cord, and by the 24 moving vertebral bones of the spine.
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your daily activities or an injury can cause these spinal bones to lose their normal position or motion which results in irritation to the spinal nerve roots. These displacements, called subluxations, may cause malfunctions in the body.
Our bodies are highly intelligent. There is a reason for every pain and/or symptom produced by our bodies. Pain is a way of our bodies communicating to us that we need to change something in our lifestyle and/or have something fixed. An individual may choose to cover up the pain and/or symptoms with a prescription or over the counter medication but then the problem is not being corrected and eventually the problem will return considerably worst and/or one will get numerous side effects from the chosen medication. Chiropractors believe that correcting the cause of the problem provides significant long-term benefits over only treating the symptoms.
Chiropractors seek to re-establish the spinal mobility to help the body operate more efficiently and comfortably. Dr. Beth will adjust the spinal segments that are subluxated only after she incorporates physiotherapies (myofasical release/massage, manual or mechanical distraction, heat, therapeutic ultrasound, cryotherapy, electrical muscle stimulation, etc...). These physiotherapies help heal the injured muscles which holds the spine in alignment.
It is much easier and cost effective to keep a problem from returning, than to treat it only periodically when it flares up. For this reason, patients in our office are instructed on correct sleeping and lifting positions. Incorrect postural habits are evaluated and instructions are given in regards to correcting work stations, laptops and other aspects of active daily living that influence your muscles and spine.
